The Little Legends Series

A Word From the Author Calvin G. Sims, Sr.

I grew up in the late 50's and early 60's. American culture was very different then. There were strict rules of behavior and decency, but there was also segregation and discrimination. Not all Americans had access to freedom on an equal basis.

The Civil Rights Movement was about freedom. Many laws that insure equality were legislated but there was an enormous cultural revolution that occurred as a result of what many Americans experienced as "Newfound Freedom."
Civil Rights March

Chief among the freedoms we enjoy today is a renewed fervor for Freedom of Speech. That freedom is most evident in the world of art. Music, poetry and film today reflect a level of freedom that our near ancestors could never have dreamed of, but at what cost. Songs that once spoke of love and romance now exclaim lust and rampant sexuality.

American Ganster
The American Dream of owning a home and raising a family has evolved into a level of blatant materialism that de-emphasizes family and promotes bling-bling. Heroes who rode across the silver screen and defended women and children and all that was moral have been replaced by menacing images of gangsters and violent criminals.
Byonce Knowles
Even any nations most sacred icon, it's women, have been reduced to images of scantily clad, sexually promiscuous, gyrating, mindless sex objects who are referred to using the most profane language imaginable.
Britney Spears

The result is the decline of the American family, a general decline in educational performance and generations of young people who seemingly have no hope for a safe and successful future.

The Lone Ranger & Tonto Herb Jeffries - The Harlem Buckaroo John Wayne - The Duke

I consider myself fortunate or as some would say, blessed in that despite growing up in an abusive foster home in the most violent neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia - I was exposed to images that were positive and inspirational. The Role models that I patterned my life after were derived from the many books I read and the TV shows and movies that I watched. These images and role models literally saved my life.

When I started StoryTellers of the American Frontier, my objective was to combat this cultural assault that threatens to destroy our children, our families and our nation. The Little Legends Series is the next progression in what I view a a war. We are actually engaged in a war over the minds, values and very character of our children.
Children on the Street

The Little Legends Series harkens back to the days of old and provides young people with stories that are designed to inspire as they teach. The stories are all true and are based on history lessons that are a part of curriculums in most schools. In addition, these stories, rather than emphasizing historical deeds as most history books do, introduce the young mind to the character and integrity that everyday ordinary people employed to make a difference and thus become the heroes we herald today.

Parent Reading to Child

The Little Legend Series provides more than something to read, these book provide a window into a way back. A way to restore America's strength which was our high value for education, family and yes, freedom.

Lawman: The Bass Reeves Story

Written by Calvin G. Sims, Sr. and skillfully illustrated by Diane Burkett-Tanner, Lawman is the same story that has captivated audiences from Savannah to San Francisco for the past ten years. The story is packed with the same excitement, the same powerful character lessons, and the same inspiration that have made Storyteller programming an integral part of many teacher's lesson plans.

Lawman is the first of the six book series based on the true stories told by Master StoryTeller, Calvin G. Sims. Many schools have enjoyed these stories through the years and can all attest to the power they have in motivating and inspiring young students to read more and to take a more active role in the classroom activities.

Just as StoryTellers programming has inspired children towards excellence. These book will motivate and inspire young minds to reach for their goals with character. The heroic stories of true American Heroes teach more than history, they teach hope. Hope for a brighter American future.

A REVIEW

In the book, LAWMAN: THE BASS REEVES STORY, Mr. Calvin Sims brings his considerable talent as a masterful storyteller in the oral tradition to the written word. This is a children’s book which brings important characters and events in our nation’s history alive!  Bass Reeves works his way from slave, to soldier in the Civil War, to a freed cowboy, to the first African American United States Deputy Marshall in the law-troubled developing West. Bass is greatly respected by all who pass through his life as a man of great character and integrity. Young children will love to have this book read to them as an exciting bedtime story. Older children, in grades 3 – 6, will be drawn to reading this adventure story on their own, as it is written in a very readable style and the story will easily grab their attention. They won’t even realize they are learning important history and important life values! Mr. Sims has made the learning of history an exciting, adventurous trip back in time. LAWMAN: THE BASS REEVES STORY is the first of a planned series of true historical adventure books for children, called the “Little Legends Series.” I have been a librarian for eighteen years and I am very excited about this kind of literature being available for children to read. I personally hated the learning of history when I was a young student because it was presented to me in a very boring way. A series of this type is a great idea for encouraging reading, for promoting good life values, and for the education of important history involving cultural diversity. Buy this book and others like it for your public library and school media center. I highly recommend it!
